Up Next: Tianna Esperenza

Words by Karan Teli

Tianna Esperenza is the true definition of a multi-faceted artist. Her debut single ‘Lewis’ – an ode to Lewis H. Michaux; the owner of Harlem’s historic African National Memorial Bookstore, is a powerful piece of work and acts as a perfect introduction to her.

The illuminating song features verses that are spoken-word, wrapped around a powerful, yet sing-a-long worthy chorus from Tianna. Issues of race, self love and violence are themes throughout Tianna’s powerful verses. Tianna uses anecdotes from Lewis’s life to speak to the importance of gaining knowledge to fight real injustice and real issues that still plague people of colour to this day. ‘Black is beautiful but black isn’t power…knowledge is power‘ she quotes in her first verse, a powerful sentiment before easing into an equally powerful but incredibly catchy chorus.

The single is accompanied by an equal powerful and artistic video. It’s clear from her debut single that Tianna’s music is going to tick so many more boxes than traditional R&B, as her messaging and sentiment throughout the song is clearly just as important as her vocals. I look forward to hearing more though-provoking and moving music from Tianna Esperanza.
